Cruise sector benefits from Guadeloupe strike
Thursday February 05 2009

Antigua and Barbuda experienced a heavy day in the cruise sector yesterday because of a number of unplanned calls.
Cruise ships pulled into the St. John’s Harbour after they were diverted from the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, after several days of a general strike over high cost of living shut down that island’s tourism sector, closed schools and petrol stations.
President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association (A&BCTA) Nathan Dundas said Antigua and Barbuda has since seen the diversion of four cruise calls due to the situation in Guadeloupe.
There were over 13,000 passengers from the cruise ships yesterday.
“We have since seen the diversion of the Azamara from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to Antigua and also the Bleu de France from Pullmantur Cruise Line,” Dundas told the Antigua Sun.
He further stated that five ships were in Antigua yesterday but one of them, Bleu De France was not on the schedule.
“Today (yesterday) we had the arrival of the Bleu De France for the third straight week into Antigua,” Dundas disclosed.
Since there was not enough space at Redcliffe or Heritage Quay to accommodate the vessel, arrangements were made for it to dock at Deep Water Harbour.
Dundas also told the SUN that they made arrangements with the St. John’s Taxi Association to have a shuttle service running between the Deep Water Harbour and downtown St. John’s to take passengers into town.
The Carnival Freedom arrived in Antigua with 3,103 passengers and 1,145 crew members, Aida Vita had 1,242 passengers and 404 crew members, the MSC Orchestra brought 2,558 passengers and 890 crew members, the Oceana had 2003 passengers and 890 crew members while Bleu De France arrived with 551 passengers and 413 crew members.
